Wedding Pro Tips

Hey Mr. DJ!

There are two things that you can tell me that make me die a little bit inside. One is that you don’t want to hire a photographer, and two, you don’t need a DJ! Yes, you do to both! But we are only going to talk about one of these right now…the DJ!

I often hear people tell me that they don’t need a DJ because their guests are not a dancing crowd, and that ends up being the opposite. Not only does a DJ get the crowd fist-pumping but they have so much more that they bring to the table.

1. They provide music and sound for your ceremony. No mics, no sound, equals no one can hear you say your vows!

2. They provide background music for your reception. I mean, wouldn’t it be a little weird not to have music playing in the background during cocktail hour or while you are having dinner? We’re not at the library, we’re at a wedding!

3. Aaaand the most important job they do is they are the MC for the night. People need to be led, they need to be told what to do and what is happening. Your DJ will introduce you when you come in, they will let you know when dinner is ready, when it’s time to cut the cake, when it’s time to toast and when it’s time for your first dance.

Oh and no your friend who’s a guest at your wedding is not the person to do this! Let your friend off for the night. Then they don’t have to work and the wedding planner doesn’t have to chase your friend around and cue him/her on what to say or do while watching him/her down 5 or 6 beers as the night progresses (ahem, yeah true story)! And don’t get me started on “I’ll just hook up a phone with a playlist!” A mobile device is not a good substitute for a DJ…who’s going to man it? Well, it ain’t the wedding planner!

Look, I know weddings are pricey but a majority of DJs will often offer different packages and you are bound to find one that fits your needs. Or you can always look into hiring someone newer and not as established. Trust me on this, hire the DJ!
